During cultivation it is grown as a biennial plant. Its seeds are a dark brown colour in the shape of a crescent moon. As a spice it is best used on its own instead of combined with other spices. It is most frequently used in dishes which are difficult to digest and in fatty dishes – roast pork, duck, and cabbage dishes. Its aroma is also suitable for boiled potatoes, sauces and soups. Caraway is also used as a classic spice for bread, spicy pastries, cheeses, cottage cheeses and other dairy products, in sausages and canned meat. The flavor is acerbic and spicy, slightly peppery and bitter and very aromatic with a very light citric taste. The fruits can contain up to 7% essential oils. Caraway is often mistaken for cumin. The two plants have family ties, but their flavor is completely different, which is why they are not mutually replaceable.
